Semi-final finish in the finale

2015-12-01

Finnish driver Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen finished fourth in semi-final one at the final round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Argentina for Swedish World RX team Marklund Motorsport and just missed out on qualifying for the final.

Driving a Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar at a World RX event for the very first time, Norwegian Thomas Bryntesson proved his potential by setting competitive lap times at the Rosario event – comparable to the most competitive in the World Championship. He qualified 16th overall thanks to tenth fastest time in heat three. He may have qualified higher up and even made the semi-finals, but for the final heat race having to be cancelled by the FIA Stewards on safety grounds.

Heikkinen started on the back row of the grid for semi-final one but was unable to find a way passed the cars ahead. “I didn’t have a good weekend really. The pace was good again, like it has been all year, but we didn’t manage to put everything together,” he said. “I took the inside line in the semi-final, but it was almost impossible to find a way passed the other cars. Winning in Belgium was my highlight of the season, that track is a good fit for me but we can’t base the season on one result, so I am a bit disappointed.”

Multiple RX Lites event winner Bryntesson was pleased with his performance in Argentina and that of the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar. “For sure it’s really fun to drive a Supercar and compete in the World Championship. It would have been great to get to the semi-finals, but I am happy with the result. The Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar is great and the speed has been really good. Unfortunately we started on the outside of the start grid every time, which made it hard in the first corner,” said Bryntesson. “When you are alongside the others it’s hard to pass them. I’m really thankful to Marklund Motorsport and PG Andersson for giving me this opportunity.”

Marklund Motorsport team principle Michael Schneider was pleased with Bryntesson’s performance and feels that Heikkinen did all he could in challenging conditions in the semi-final to make it to the final. “Thomas really did a very good job this weekend. His lap times were very impressive and with more time in the car I think he could do a better job too. In the third heat he set third quickest overall lap time, just behind Solberg and Jeanny. I’m sure there’s a lot more to come from him in the future,” said Schneider. “Topi was well inside qualifying for the semi-finals and it’s a shame that we were not able to start in the final at the last round of the season.”
