2016 Polo RX Supercar

New Swedish rallycross team, Volkswagen RX Sweden, launched the striking new Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar that will compete in all 12 rounds of the FIA World Rallycross Championship Presented by Monster Energy this season in Stockholm on Wednesday (March 23), complete with new-for-2016 livery.

Working from its winter base in Boliden, in the north of Sweden, the new team – an amalgamation of Kristoffersson Motorsport and Marklund Motorsport – have been working flat-out through the off season period to prepare for the opening round of the World Rallycross Championship, which takes place in Portugal next month (April 16-17). The new Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar livery is based on the Swedish flag and includes branding from partners, led by Bauhaus and Bergteamet.

Working together with Team CEO Jan Marklund and Sporting Director Tommy Kristoffersson, the project is led by Team Principal, Michael Schneider. “Today we are delighted to present the Volkswagen RX Sweden car for 2016. We know that our competitors will not stand still and keep working to improve their cars, but so have we,” said Schneider. “We have spent a lot of time analysing the strengths and advantages of the 2015 cars from Marklund Motorsport and Kristoffersson Motorsport, and tried to combine the best of both concepts into one car. The whole team has been working hard to build this car and I want to use this chance to thank every single person in the team for their effort, passion and contribution to our team. We all have the same aim and everyone is willing to do the upmost to reach this.”

Johan Kristoffersson won the opening round of World RX in Portugal last season, and has been competing in rallies over the winter months to prepare for the new campaign. “The new car looks awesome, I really like it and I’m proud to have my name on it,” said Kristoffersson. “I’m really looking forward to the start of the season, to spend some time with all of the guys on the race weekends and build a nice team atmosphere. I’m now focusing on the pre-season tests to get the most out of it and arrive in Montalegre (Portugal) with the best possible package. I’ve been able to compete in six rallies this winter, and have done about 700 kilometers in a rally car, which has helped a lot with my focus, development and with some new ideas for World RX.”

World RX podium finisher Anton Marklund returns to a Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar full-time for 2016 and is excited by the developments made by the new team, ahead of his fourth season of Supercar competition. “The car is really great, the team has put a lot of effort in every single detail and I must admit that I love the new livery. It’s simple, nice and at the same time aggressive. I’ve known Johan (Kristoffersson) pretty well from the Swedish National Team camps we have had in the last few years; he’s a funny, easygoing guy,” said Marklund. “I have been spending more time with him, working together, and I have to say we are very similar in many ways. Our different experiences in life and racing will help the team move forward. Every time I’m in the workshop I have a smile on my face, not only because of the great bunch of guys, but also because I have the opportunity to drive for the newly formed team.”

Head of Volkswagen Sweden, Sten Forsberg, is looking forward to the start of the new World RX season. “There’s only a few weeks to go until the season starts in Portugal,” he said. “It feels really good that we now can show the new car which will take part in one of the toughest competitions in the history of rallycross, ever! With the joint forces in the new team, I think we have a good chance to be competitive and fight for podiums.”

The team will undergo a testing programme to be as prepared as possible ahead of the opening round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Portugal next month.
