Dubbla pallplatser i Canada

Swedish rallycross team Marklund Motorsport finished second and third at the seventh round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Trois-Rivieres in Canada [8 August].

Starting fourth and fifth in semi-final one, Finn Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen and American Tanner Foust both improved to progress to the final, where the pair drove brilliant races to finish on the podium; Heikkinen just missing out on victory by two tenths of a second to winner Davy Jeanney. Proving the pace of the Volkswagen Polo RX, Heikkinen and Foust set the fastest two laps in the final, Heikkinen just edging Foust by two hundredths of a second.

Heikkinen’s second place finish replicates the team’s podium in Canada last season. “It was a tough final, but we had good speed. It’s great to be on the podium again, second and third is really good for us,” said Heikkinen. “We had really tough heats and had to work hard to find the pace, but it’s great to stand on second position and I’m really pleased for the team. They did an amazing job this weekend.”

American TV star Tanner Foust made his third of four 2015 appearances for Marklund Motorsport in Canada. He had a difficult set of heat races stuck in traffic but found clear air in the semi-final and final to finish on the podium for the first time this season. “Transitioning into the World Rallycross Championship, you see straight away the drivers who are here all the time – they are so comfortable and so quick from the very first lap of the weekend,” said Foust. “I felt like I was really working to catch up on that pace. By the final it felt good, but through the heats I struggled a bit in traffic. Third place after all of that is great and I’m really happy for the team and Topi, he deserves a good result.”

Marklund Motorsport team principle Michael Schneider was delighted with the team’s performance, and believes it shows a significant step forward. “Again we’ve seen how good Topi is in the semis and finals. When it really counts, he is a good, hard, wheel-to-wheel fighter,” he said. “Topi was flying, he pushed Jeanney in the final and maybe with two more laps he would have been able to conquer him too. Tanner had a very, very good race. Starting from the last row to finish on the podium – I think that says everything. This result is a very good and positive step forward.”

The next round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship takes place at Hell, Norway [August 22-23].
